BUSINESS AND WRITING: 1/19/2005 - Lego League at Horace Mann

To help reach out to the community, Team MORTORQ is working to set up FIRST Lego League teams at the Beverly middle schools, targeting the schools that participate in other science competitions. Our goals - 1) to get these middle school students more interested in engineering and robotics and 2) to scout for possible FIRST Robotics team members. We have been very fortunate to have the help of parent Eileen Kahn who has helped us get in contact with the right people to get this program started.

FIRST Lego League is basically the middle school version of FIRST Robotics - more information can be found at the official homepage, here. A partnership between the Lego Company and FIRST, FLL targets 9- to 14-year-olds. The competition itself starts earlier than Robotics, around September. (Registration begins in May - the approximate cost is $650.)

On January 18, after a few weeks of planning and discussion between the Business and Writing group members and people at Horace Mann Middle School, Mrs. Kahn presented a proposal to the Executive board of the Horace Mann PTA to institute the FIRST Lego League.

The program will probably be run through the City of Beverly Hills Recreation and Parks Department. It will be a class offered through the after school program and will be open only to students in grades 6, 7, and 8. The estimated total cost of the program will be about $1,000. BHHS students currently on the robotics team will act as mentors and will receive community service credit.

The class will probably meet one day each week for 90 minutes. The class will probably begin as soon as school resumes in September. If necessary, students can meet on weekends during the competition phase. Maximum enrollment will be 14 students, with 10 acting as team members and four as alternates. The teacher/coach will be Mrs. Kahn who is currently acting as the parent mentor for the BHHS team. She is employed by the City of Beverly Hills and has been teaching and running after school programs for six years.

The Principal and other parents are very excited to have such an exciting enrichment program at the school.

We are currently looking to see if Hawthorne Middle School is interested in a similar program - we're in contact with Hawthorne's PTA.
